01 / INTERACTIVE STUDY

Gaps in observation

Imagine a lamp that stays on while a camera takes pictures only some of the time. No photo does not mean the lamp was off. Drag the slider to take fewer pictures: hollow circles in the middle row mean missing observations. The bottom row deliberately records those gaps as “off,” making the lamp seem to flicker regularly. That pattern comes from the record, not the lamp.

Synthetic observations compared with incorrect zero fillingThe top row stays at one. Hollow circles in the middle row mark missing observations. The bottom row incorrectly fills gaps with zero.

Artificially constructed, not real firefly measurements. This illustration does not calculate a spectrum or establish a rhythm in nature.
